Hello! My name is Mariia and it’s been 2 years I am learning Korean in an online school in Ukraine, where I was born. I am also interested in Korean Art History. At the moment I have almost finished my Master's degree in Research in Modern and Contemporary Art in France.
I represented Yongwang 용왕, the Korean dragon-god, king of the seas. I was trying to respect the references of old Korean masters, especially the facial expression of the dragon, but of course I executed this artwork in my own artistic style. Yongwang is considered to be the ruler of moving bodies of water, such as waterfalls, rivers, or seas. In order to facilitate the movement of the ocean current, he is holding two ceramics from the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). At the top of the drawing, the oil bottle is decorated with peony leaves. The second object held by the dragon is inspired by the Maebyeong (plum bottle).
Some scholars have characterized Korean art as flat in volume and graphically linear in surface design. Nonetheless, the underlying characteristics of Korean art are vitality, spontaneity, and unconcern for technical perfection (nonchalance). (Seckel.D., Some Characteristics of Korean Art, 1977) I believe these two ceramics are typical of this and I have left the links below for you to see.
I appreciate how the sun is depicted, but I interpreted it thanks to the addition of many strokes. I also chose the black color. For me, the black sun has a special meaning. I view it as a choice. We are free to choose how we perceive life in our world: as black and white stripes or full of different colors. Even though the sun seems to be black, it makes our world bright.
It took me many hours to achieve my artwork, it was a challenge for me because I really wanted to interpret respectfully the old Korean iconography and to do it with my personal details.
In order to retain the right to the photographer’s image, I invite you to go to the following link and view the art objects that inspired me to create this picture:
