“Have You Eaten?” The Korean Language of Care

project intent

My first K-culture moment was discovering that, in Korea, asking someone whether they have eaten can be far more than a question about food. Through a Korean drama, I encountered this quiet expression of care and began noticing the culture surrounding it: shared dishes, gathering around a meal, gratitude before eating, and the warmth of simply being together.

Coming from Pakistan, I found something unexpectedly familiar. In my family, “Have you eaten?” has never really been about food. It is a mother waiting for her child to come home, a grandmother noticing that you have left half your plate untouched, an elder quietly making sure everyone has been cared for before caring for themselves.

Through this story, I explore how one ordinary Korean question became a bridge between two cultures - and taught me that some of the deepest expressions of love are hidden inside the simplest words.
