‘Arirang - A Piece of Musical Heritage’ - One Person Band Version

2023.09.26

While thinking of ideas for this contest, sitting at my desk and doing infinite searching, I found myself clicking my pen or tapping my tabletop, creating repeated rhythms.

This made me think, why do I not try to recreate a folk song using items around me?

After doing some research, Arirang 아리랑 felt like the best choice.

This Korean folk song is estimated to be around 600 years old and there are countless variations of it, including adaptations in different languages.

The lyrics vary in all these versions but some common themes between them are love, sorrow and longing.

The word itself (’Arirang’) does not have a specific meaning in Korean but different researchers have come up with their own explanations to what might have been the origin of the word.

It has been awarded twice as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, proving the significance of the song.

For this video I challenged myself to recreate the song using common stationary items, playing a bit with the idea of having a song stuck in your head

while you are studying, probably spending the day humming it away.

I added the piano in the second half to make it sound ‘smoother’ and I hope it was a good rendition despite my lack of musical skills.

I also wanted to use a more traditional song to showcase the beauty of Korean Music that can be so diverse from what the general public is more used to.
