Korea - A bridge of Nations

This year, South Korea commemorates 80 years of freedom since the end of Japanese occupation. This painting is a tribute to that history, to its progress, and to the solidarity that connected Colombia and Korea.

On the left side, we see the past, a time of struggle and hope. A Colombian soldier stands as a reminder that Colombia was the only Latin American country to send troops during the Korean War, offering support to the people fighting to secure their freedom. Behind him, the Korean flag appears partially burnt, symbolizing the scars of colonization but also the light that announces the arrival of a new time. The Independence Gate rises as a symbol of resistance and the unbreakable desire of a country to reclaim its freedom.

On the right side, Korea appears transformed. It's a nation that, despite war and hardship, rose and moved forward. The city of Seoul shines brightly with its skyscrapers, technology, and vibrant energy, reflecting the achievements reached over these eight decades. In the foreground, a Korean man holds a 무궁화, the national flower, which symbolizes Korea’s resilience and eternity. Above the modern skyline, fireworks spell out the word 자유, which means freedom, celebrating the peace and progress the nation has achieved.

Finally, a white crane crosses the sky, linking past and present, reminding us that peace is not just the end of conflict, but the bridge that allows nations to grow together.

This painting is an homage to memory, solidarity, and hope. As a Colombian I believe that eighty years after its liberation, South Korea stands as an inspiration to believe that freedom and progress are possible when nations support one another.
